Every junior engineer today is asking the same question: if AI can write the code, what exactly am I here for?
I started my career at Oracle building mission-critical systems for public safety, and I learned to code at 1337 Coding School, a school where you had no teachers, no AI tools, just you, the docs, and a problem to solve. That combination gave me a front-row seat to what AI changes about software engineering, and what it doesn't.
In this talk, I'll argue that three things still matter deeply when the machine can code:
• Understanding over output: AI can generate a function that works. It can't tell you why it works, when it breaks, or how it fits into a system it doesn't fully see. That's still your job.
• Debugging and systems thinking: When something fails in production, AI gives you guesses. You need to reason about the system, trace the failure, understand the state, own the diagnosis.
• Learning to learn: The tooling will change every 12 months. The engineers who thrive aren't the ones who mastered today's tools, they're the ones who can pick up tomorrow's in a week.
This isn't a talk about whether AI is good or bad for developers. It's a talk about what junior engineers should double down on right now, before the gap between those who understand and those who just prompt becomes impossible to close.
This talk is aimed at junior and early-career developers, but senior engineers mentoring teams will find it equally relevant.
