Platform Engineering in action: A common front door for dev and infra

This session demonstrates how Backstage can serve as a unified front-end for automation, enabling developers to self-service application management through standardized Ansible workflows while maintaining governance. Running on Kubernetes with Quarkus templates, it bridges development and infrastructure teams, fostering collaboration and streamlined lifecycle management.

talks.description
With the advent of infrastructure as code and automation, infrastructure teams are increasingly becoming developers in their own domain. Concepts like GitOps, sprints, blue-green or canary deployments, once exclusive to application development, now also shape the infrastructure landscape. Yet despite these shared practices, collaboration between application and infrastructure teams often remains limited, and silos persist.

By turning Backstage into a front-end for automation, organizations can offer developers self-service access to manage application lifecycles and trigger standardized Ansible automation, while infrastructure teams maintain governance, compliance, and visibility.

The session showcases a real setup running on Kubernetes, exposing Quarkus software templates and Ansible playbooks as self-service actions. Attendees will walk away with examples to build their own unified entry point that empowers both dev and infra teams to collaborate efficiently under the same umbrella.
