Ben Evans is a Java Champion and Senior Principal Software Engineer at Red Hat / IBM, where he is the Technical Lead for Observability for Cloud Native Runtimes. Previously he was Lead Architect for Instrumentation at New Relic, and co-founded jClarity, a performance tools startup acquired by Microsoft.He has also worked as Chief Architect for Listed Derivatives at Deutsche Bank and as Senior Technical Instructor for Morgan Stanley. He served for 6 years on the Java Community Process Executive Committee, helping define new Java standards.Ben is the author of six books, including "Optimizing Cloud Native Java", the new editions of “Java in a Nutshell” and the recently-updated “The Well-Grounded Java Developer” and writes regularly for Oracle's Java Magazine and other industry publications.

In his day-to-day, he is somewhere between a Data and Full-stack Software Engineer, with a wide range of tech & job exposure both in academia and industry.For the past 7 years he's been working with various teams in CERN (the European Organization for Nuclear Research). He is also a contributor to various Open Source projects, including Quarkus, Spring, LangChain4J, WireMock, and Microcks, as well as a speaker at many public events and user groups around the world.Eric recently put his Quarkus and Spring knowledge to use by publishing his first book, “Quarkus for Spring Developers.” Outside of work, Eric enjoys boating on the lakes of New Hampshire, ice hockey, and martial arts, in which he holds a black belt in Kempo Karate.
