From Guild Craft to AI Code: Why ‘Close Looking’ Is the Last Developer Skill

In medieval guilds, craftsmanship wasn’t just about making; it was about inspection, judgment, and trust. Masters didn’t simply produce work, they certified its quality through careful, trained observation. Fast forward through the Industrial Revolution, when we traded craft for scale. The Aesthetic Movement, or Arts and Crafts movement, reacted against this, and software engineering as a discipline has experienced this tension as much as any 19th century furniture designer or wallpaper artistan.
With the rise of AI tools, developers can generate more code than ever before. But as output explodes, trust erodes. Code that looks correct isn’t always correct. Systems that seem sound can quietly fail. The bottleneck is no longer writing, it’s knowing what to trust.
I’ve been exploring this concept of trust and observation by building a close-looking application for the stained glass of Chartres Cathedral, a place where meaning only emerges through sustained, careful attention to detail, pattern, and context. This work reveals something critical: seeing well is a skill, and it can be designed for, practiced, and improved.
This talk connects these worlds.

Jen Looper is a creative technologist and educator with over 25 years' experience as a web and mobile developer and Developer Advocate. She is the Director of Developer Relations at Cloudinary and has worked as a software engineer and Developer Advocate at companies including Progress/Telerik and Microsoft, where she wrote viral curricula, and AWS, where she founded AWS Cloud Clubs for students globally. A published author, Jen has written Computer Science for Kids, a textbook aligned to CSTA standards for grades 6-8, as well as The Illustrated AWS Cloud, both published by Wiley.
