Francesco Bongiovanni
Francesco Bongiovanni is working at LuxProvide in Luxembourg, where he started as the responsible for the team maintaining MeluXina, Luxembourg's national supercomputer, which was ranked 36th in the Top500 and 4th in the Green500 in June 2021. From January 2021 to February 2023, he led the Compute and Data Services group at LuxProvide, where he was instrumental in setting up MeluXina. He has been involved with the MeluXina project since its very inception in February 2019 while at LIST. Since February 2023, Francesco is leading the Supercomputing Application Services group at LuxProvide, focusing on onboarding customers, managing the MeluXina User Software Environment (MUSE), debugging applications, and porting code to various hardware. His team is also involved in several EU projects, including a Flagship project called DeployAl from the European Commission , EuroHPC-funded project EPICURE, and EuroCC2.Prior to his roles at LuxProvide, Francesco worked at the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) for over seven years where he started as a Research and Technology Associate, providing the eScience Unit with Big Data computing capabilities. Later on, he designed and managed the LIST High Performance Computer and provided support to researchers. He also contributed to the design of advanced computing infrastructure across LIST, including the Vizualization Wall cluster, and was involved in the design of the future national Luxembourgish HPC and the NVidia Joint AI Lab with the University of Luxembourg. His background includes experience as an applied researcher and HPC system administrator. He possesses skills in Computer Science, Large Scale Systems, High Performance Computing, and Big Data. Francesco holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from INRIA and the University of Nice-Sophia Antipolis. Francesco's earlier career includes roles as an R&D Engineer/Post-Doc at CNRS and the University of Joseph Fourier, Grenoble, where he worked on simulation platforms for embedded systems and deployment management systems for cloud infrastructures. His Ph.D. research at INRIA focused on the design, formalization, and implementation of overlay networks, with applications to RDF data storage. He also has experience as a Lecturer/Teaching Assistant at Université Nice Sophia Antipolis, where he taught courses on Distributed Algorithms and Operating Systems. Additionally, Francesco gained industry experience as a Software Engineering Intern at Amadeus, where he worked on a middleware framework for accessing core business logics, and in R&D Labs at Materne Confilux S.A. He also worked as a Web Application Developer Freelance for Pioneer Software and FTE S.A.
