Java 28 will soon introduce, as a preview feature, value classes (JEP 401), a new kind of class that renounces its identity to get better performance.

In this presentation, we will explain what value classes are, how the Java spec was re-interpreted to conjure their existence, how they interact with existing code and what optimizations they enable both on the stack and the heap.

To make it concrete, we'll explore these ideas through the simulation and rendering of a black hole: calculating the trajectories of thousands of light rays through curved spacetime means manipulating huge numbers of vectors, rays, coordinates, and intermediate values.

Finally, we will look ahead at the experimental "!" syntax for null-restricted types, its optimization potential, and the limitations of the current design.

Tenured associate professor at Université Gustave Eiffel (Paris) and longtime OpenJDK member researching runtime environments (Java VM, .NET). He has contributed to major Java features including invokedynamic (JSR 292), Lambda (JSR 335), and the Jigsaw module system (JSR 376), and currently works on OpenJDK's Amber (records, pattern matching) and Valhalla (value types) projects. He's also the main contributor to the ASM bytecode library.
A frequent conference speaker (Devoxx France, FOSDEM), he regularly presents on modern Java features like virtual threads, structured concurrency, and value types.
