Integration patterns for distributed systems
The session explains distributed-systems challenges in modern interconnected applications—such as retries, idempotence, ordering, and failures—and the design trade-offs and patterns used to manage them. It targets architects, developers, and executives, and offers guidance for modernizing legacy systems into loosely coupled, flexible, scalable architectures.

Today's applications are interconnected: they expose APIs, publish events, call third-party services, and externalize states. They must therefore address the fundamental challenges of distributed systems, such as out-of-order delivery, retries, idempotence, and partial failures. To address these challenges, architects must carefully evaluate integration options while considering how to manage complex system interactions. In this session, learn about common design trade-offs for distributed systems and how to navigate them with design patterns, illustrated by examples.
The target audience is from many floors the architect elevator would stop by: Software architects, software developers, IT executives and everyone around - such general software architecture sessions are relevant for many roles in every company in every segment. For those with legacy architectures, it provides an outlook on what migration and modernization transformation they could go through in order to get towards flexible, individually evolvable and scalable systems that are loosely coupled.

Dirk Fröhner
In his role as Principal Solutions Architect at Amazon Web Services, Dirk Fröhner works with software companies on their multi-dimensional transformation. Target areas include technology and software architecture evolution, organizational change, and innovation culture. For this, he contributes his wealth of professional experience and knowledge of human nature, all of which he gained from 25+ years in the business. Dirk's favorite software architecture topic is everything around integration architecture, both in theory and practice: After all, most considerations of building software systems turn out to be integration problems - particularly when it comes to distributed systems. He keeps speaking about this at tech conferences globally, including flagship events like AWS re:Invent. In his spare time, Dirk is a pain-resistant supporter of Schalke 04.
Sabarish Sekar
Sabarish Sekar is an ISV Solutions Architect at Amazon Web Services, where he helps independent software vendors accelerate innovation and modernize their platforms on AWS. With over 13 years of hands-on experience as a developer and solutions architect spanning healthcare and financial services, he brings a practitioner's perspective to solving complex architectural challenges.
Sabarish is passionate about building resilient, scalable systems using serverless technologies, event-driven integration patterns, and the emerging possibilities of Agentic AI. He enjoys breaking down complex topics into practical, actionable guidance that engineering teams can apply immediately.
