A retro model train hobby project was modernized with Seeed Studio hardware, Bluetooth, and TinyGo to create a digital railway network with individual train control for speed, direction, and lights. In the 1970s, model trains were a popular hobby. Thanks to low production costs, anyone could afford a small HO gauge layout. The system was simple: a train, a motor, 12V DC in the track, and off you go!
Fifty years later, we took our trains out of the attic with a big idea in mind: to convert them to digital. With some Seeed Studio, Bluetooth, and TinyGo, we managed to get a functional railway network, were we can manage speed, direction, and lights of each train individually.
This talk speaks about hardware and software architecture for embedded systems, in a retrospective format about all our successes (and mistakes) during the conception of this project. Everything is open-source, so don't hesitate to use it, fork it, and enhance it!
